SSDI, SSI & Concurrent Benefits

SSDI and SSI use different financial eligibility frameworks, although both require a disability that meets the federal standard. The appropriate program depends on your employment record, income, resources, and individual circumstances.

The principal eligibility differences include:

  • SSDI: Eligibility depends on your work history, qualifying Social Security coverage, and insured status when your disability began.
  • SSI: Eligibility isn’t based on prior employment. The program is intended for people with limited income and resources, including a resource limit of $2,000 or less in cash or combined bank accounts.
  • Concurrent benefits: An Iowa claimant may qualify for both programs when a low SSDI payment, income, resources, and employment record support eligibility.

Eligibility requires more than a diagnosis. The agency considers whether an applicant’s physical or mental conditions prevent work at the required level and whether the applicable financial or work-credit rules are satisfied.

Starting a Disability Claim in Linn County, Iowa

We offer a free consultation to people considering a claim. During the initial consultation, we assess whether the claimant is unable to perform substantial gainful activity, meaning the level of work and earnings used to evaluate disability.

Medical conditions, treatment history, past employment, and prior Social Security notices are relevant to that discussion. Bringing available records and notices can help us understand the status of your case, but you don’t need to determine which program applies before contacting us.

We put clients first throughout the claim process. We explain procedural steps, address questions about the evidence, and pursue each case with an understanding of the financial and personal strain that can accompany an inability to work.
